Public Hearing On Constitution Review; South-South Calls For State Creation AndTrue Federalism

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen Douye Diri , lawmakers along with Stakeholders across the south south has called for the adoption of true federalism and a restructured revenue-sharing formula.

According to the stakeholders who also advocated for the creation of a state police, any meaningful constitutional amendment must reflect the values, aspirations, and socio-economic realities of the people.

They expressed this position during the South-south Centre A Public Hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), held in yenagoa , Bayelsa State capital.

While describing the review as a timely and laudable endeavour, stakeholders stressed the need to revitalise the Constitution so it can better respond to Nigeria’s evolving challenges.

They throw their weight in supports of urgent constitutional amendments, including fiscal federalism, state policing, control of mineral resources, reserve seat for women and the recognition of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) as full local government areas.
