Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has entered into an agreement with over 600 private car owners to transport pregnant women to any nearby health facility.
This was disclosed by a director of the agency, Dr Abdulqadir Yakubu, during a town hall meeting in Kiyawa local government area organized by Save the Children International held at Federal Government College Kiyawa.
Dr Yakubu said Save the Children International through the INSPIRING project will support the programme and include children under five years in any emergencies.
According to him, under the programme, the car owners were selected by members from the respective community and were screened by the government.
He said the state government has a special fund in the agency’s account for this purpose and the car owners will be paid monthly according to the number of trips.
Meanwhile, Jigawa State Government says educating nomads is playing a vital role in solving most of the insecurity challenges in the country.
The State’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr Lawan Yunusa Danzomo stated this at a media engagement forum held in Dutse.
He said the State Government had observed that the nomads had serious limitations to equitable access to basic education through the conventional education system which is making them involve in drug abuse and other criminal activities.
The Commissioner noted that plans were also underway for the establishment of 10 new Junior Secondary Schools for the nomadic community to accommodate pupils that have graduated from primary schools.
He added that 164 adult education centres were also established to train the adult nomads on how to carry out their religious activities and how to settle disputes among themselves amicably.
