Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria in Jigawa State barred entrance to the State House of Assembly as they began an indefinite strike today.
The strike is over the failure of the state government to implement financial autonomy for its legislative arm.
The chairperson of the union in the state, Umar Kazaure, said the strike followed the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum the union gave to the government to implement financial autonomy for the legislature.
Umar Kazaure said the union was patient for two years after President Muhammadu Buhari signed the financial autonomy act, but state governors have failed to implement it.
He said the association would continue the strike until their demands are met.
Umar Kazaure also said if state governments fail to address their demands, the union would embark on a nationwide strike.
In a similar incident, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, Yobe State House of Assembly chapter has sealed off the entrance of the state assembly complex over financial autonomy.
The state chairman of the union, Comrade Zanna Ali, who led the protest, said they would not allow the house of assembly members to attend today’s sitting until their demand is addressed.
He said the protest was in compliance with the directives from the national body.
According to him, the action is as a result of non-implementation of the financial autonomy for the state legislature and judiciary which guarantees the independent of the two arms of government.
In a statement, the national president of the association, Comrade Usman Ahmed, said the union has exhausted all attempts asking for implementation.
