Police arrest 5 over lynching of man accused of phone theft

Detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command have arrested five persons who were allegedly among a mob accused of beating a 22-year-old man to death for allegedly stealing a phone.

It was gathered that the deceased, who the police said was wrongly accused, died as a result of injuries he sustained from beating by the mob action.

Spokesman of the police in the state, Bala Elkana who confirmed the incident, said the five persons were nabbed following a complaint at Langbasa Police Station on July 8 about the death of one Olamide Omolegbe.

He said the deceased was accused of stealing a phone by one Bolanle Muhammed in her soft drinks shop at Bodore, Ajah.

He said the false alarm raised by the shop owner led to the beating and killing of the victim by four of the suspects.

Elkana gave the names of the suspects as Wasiu Wahab, Ramon Ibrahim, Junior Adebayo and Yusuf Adegbite.

“The four persons actually beat up the guy and when he was dead, they threw him into the Lagoon. His body was recovered by a team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Ada Okafor, on July 10 at Badore Jetty and deposited at Mainland Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.

“Five suspects including the woman who raised the false alarm were arrested. Wasiu Wahab who is the principal murder suspect and Yusuf Adegbite were arrested inside the Lagoon where they hid themselves in order to evade arrest.

“Investigation revealed that the phone was actually stolen by the son of the woman who wrongly accused the deceased person. The suspects confessed to the commission of the crime.
