The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its invitation to Alhaji Sanusi, a disputed Emir in Kano State, in connection with an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025. Instead, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) will obtain his statement in Kano.
The incident happened when Alhaji Sanusi, despite agreeing not to hold a Durbar Festival or ride a horse on Sallah Day, mounted a horse in a procession after Eid Prayers, accompanied by local vigilantes. This led to a confrontation with youths in the community, resulting in the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru and several others injured.
The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has launched an investigation into the incident and made some arrests. The Force is committed to conducting its investigation with professionalism and ensuring justice is served.
“We are deeply concerned about the incident and assure the public that our actions are guided solely by the principles of justice, neutrality, and professionalism,” said ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer.
In a statement issued on April 6, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all citizens. The Force remains resolute in its commitment to conducting its criminal investigation duties with the highest level of professionalism. All individuals found culpable will be brought to justice.
