The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has denied that it plans a mass disconnection of telephone subscribers as a result of the ongoing exercises of linkage of SIM Registration Records with the National Identity Number.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Adinde.
According to the statement, the minister of communication and digital economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami, has assured that the government will continue to review the linkage exercise in the light of experiences to ensure its smooth implementation.
The federal government recently directed mobile telecoms operators to disconnect all mobile lines which are not be linked to National Identification Numbers after a deadline. The directive has led to chaos as subscribers across the nation, who are yet to do so, scramble to resister for National Identification Numbers before the deadline.
