The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly begun investigating the campaign funds of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), with sources alleging that it is part of a strategy targeting opposition politicians, Daily Nigerian reports.

The investigation into NNPP follows the recent arrest of former Delta State Governor and 2023 vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ifeanyi Okowa, over alleged campaign fund mismanagement.

Sources claim the probe focuses on NNPP’s national leader and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, possibly leading to his arrest. A source disclosed that the EFCC has been instructed to open a case file against the leader based on allegations by expelled NNPP members regarding campaign fund mismanagement.

Justice Yusuf Ubale Mohammed of the Kano State High Court previously issued an order restraining the EFCC from inviting or arresting Mr. Kwankwaso over these allegations. However, there are suggestions that the EFCC may bypass the court order due to external pressures.

The renewed investigation has been linked to Mr. Kwankwaso’s recent criticisms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. During a convocation ceremony at Skyline University in Kano, Mr. Kwankwaso commented on political dominance in northern Nigeria, sparking debates.

His political influence was also highlighted during his daughter’s wedding in Kano, which brought together opposition leaders for extended meetings and discussions.
