Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has revealed that, he would pursue the call made by the management of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, to upgrade the institution to university status, with the National Universities Commission (NUC).

He made the disclosure when the management team of the institution paid him a courtesy visit today, Wednesday, during the State Executive Council meeting, at Africa House, Government House, Kano.

The team was led by the Provost of the College, Prof Yahaya Isa Bunkure, who pleaded with the governor for the lingering call to upgrade them to university status, after intimating the Council members that, they were at the Council for the visit to inform them about 40 years anniversary of the College.

Governor said “I am happy that the College is now a Degree awarding institution. Therefore the call for the upgrading of this College to university, is without much financial commitment.

Because most of the facilities needed are already there. Even lecturers we need to employ Professors.”

Encouraging further that, “We can see how we can pursue this, so that we can actualize it. The only thing is, it will not continue awarding Certificate of Education. But we can still move all NCE Courses to other institutions. Just as some of our institutions have already started awarding NCEs.”

While acknowledging that, the College is a premier College of Education, established in 1981, he stated that, he thought it was the largest College of Education in the country.

Going down to memory lane, governor Ganduje reminded that, “Mine is to trace the nucleus of the College of Education that started in 1976, as Gumel Advanced Teachers College.

But after the creation of Jigawa state, we lost Gumel Advanced Teachers College, because it was located in Gumel, now under Jigawa state.

Then during late Muhammadu Abubakar Rimi, he created College of Education, Kumbotso, Kano, in 1981.”
