Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commented on the upcoming local government elections, stating, “No retreat, no surrender,” despite a recent Federal High Court ruling that voided the polls.
The court’s decision was based on concerns about having card-carrying members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) serving as executive officers of the election commission.
Governor Yusuf spoke during a rally on Thursday evening, where he presented NNPP flags to the 44 chairmen and councillor contestants at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium.
The event attracted a crowd of supporters.
“No one will stop KANSIEC from holding the polls on Saturday,” Yusuf said, emphasizing the authority of the state government and the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to conduct the election.
He said he would swear in candidates declared winners by the electoral body.
The governor urged NNPP members to return to their wards and prepare for the elections. “You are the supporters of our party,” he stated, expressing confidence that the NNPP would win all 44 chairmanship positions and 484 councillor seats.8Yusuf expressed thanks for the protection granted to the state.
Dr. Audu Ajuji, the Acting National Chairman of the NNPP, who traveled from Abuja for the event, said he hoped for a peaceful election. “We are confident that we will win all the elective positions without any issues,” he stated.
Alhaji Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, the state NNPP Party Chairman, described the gathering as significant and said the party is committed to a presence in Kano politics beyond 2027.
“The people of the state are always with NNPP leaders because of their honesty,” Dungurawa noted, adding that the party’s integrity has led them to reject corrupt politicians from the opposition.
