The Kano State Government has announced plans to prosecute tax defaulters starting in 2025 as part of reforms in tax administration.
Dr. Zaid Abubakar, Executive Chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), revealed this during a presentation at a High-Level Retreat for top government officials.
He stated, “Our focus is to make tax compliance seamless while holding defaulters accountable. This is about improving efficiency, not overburdening the people.”
The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has projected over ₦20 billion in quarterly revenue for 2025, driven by a new model for tax collection.
Earlier this year, the Kano State Internal Revenue Service underwent restructuring with new leadership, which has reportedly boosted revenue in the latter half of 2024.
The reforms are expected to strengthen the financial base of Kano State and support investments in critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education during the 2025 fiscal year.
