Gunmen raided the Federal University Birnin-Kebbi, abducting a 400-level student, Augustine Madubiya, and killing a local resident, Malam Sidi Husseini. The incident occurred around 3:00 am at Istijaba Villa, an off-campus hostel in Unguwar Jeji. The attackers, five armed men, approached students sleeping outside their rooms due to the hot weather, demanding money. When the students couldn’t provide any cash, they were beaten. Malam Sidi Husseini, a local herder, attempted to intervene and was shot dead.
Augustine Madubiya was taken by the assailants, while another student, a 200-level Business Administration student, managed to escape. The student’s escape has provided valuable insight into the incident, but the whereabouts of Augustine Madubiya remain unknown. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene alongside security personnel to assess the situation and provide support to the affected students.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, and the university leadership is calling for increased security collaboration to prevent future incidents. The incident was reported to the Governor of Kebbi State through state channels, and an investigation is underway to apprehend the perpetrators. The university community is in shock, and many are demanding increased security measures to protect students and staff.
