The Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the appointment of His Royal Highness, Justice (Rtd) Sidi Muhammad Bage, the Emir of Lafia, as the new Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano.
This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Friday.
The decision, hailed by stakeholders as visionary, reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening the synergy between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and its centers of higher learning.
Born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Emir Sidi Bage holds a diploma and an LLB from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.
His distinguished legal career began as a magistrate in 1982, later ascending to the position of High Court Judge in 1992, then to the Court of Appeal in 2007, and ultimately to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in January 2017.
In March 2019, following the passing of his predecessor, Emir Isa Mustapha Agwai I, he was appointed as the 17th Emir of Lafia a role through which he has become widely respected as a custodian of peace, justice, and community cohesion.
By entrusting Emir Bage with the chancellorship, Northwest University, Kano, continues its tradition of drawing from Nigeria’s most accomplished and principled leaders to serve in ceremonial and advisory capacities.
Governor Yusuf underscored that appointing a retired Supreme Court Justice and revered traditional ruler reflects the university’s dedication to excellence, integrity, and national development.
The governor further highlighted Emir Bage’s sterling record of fairness, deep social engagement, and leadership—qualities expected to inspire the university community and help steer the institution toward greater achievements.
The appointment letter was presented to the Emir today by the Chairman of the University Council Prof. Hafiz Abubakar in company of the VC Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa.
