Kano State’s contingent at the 8th edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, has appealed to Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf for urgent intervention due to inadequate funding.

A source within the contingent, who requested anonymity, revealed that the Kano State Sports Commission had initially submitted a funding proposal of ₦60 million through the office of the Secretary to the State Governor. However, this amount was reduced to ₦17 million. Despite the approval of the reduced funds, the commission has not yet received the money, leaving the athletes in a difficult situation.

“It’s concerning that despite the approval, the funds have not been transferred. This delay will affect our performance, and Kano might return without any medals,” the source stated.

During the last edition of the National Youth Games, ₦48 million was allocated for over 250 athletes. This year, 145 athletes are participating, but they have been allocated significantly less, despite increased costs.

One athlete commented, “Under the previous administration, the Kano State Sports Commission ensured our well-being. Now, we are left in a challenging situation.”

Athletes have reported logistical difficulties, including late arrivals at venues and struggles to afford accommodation and meals.

“We’ve received allowances for only two or three days, yet we’ve been here for six days with no word on further support,” another athlete said.

Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, have been unsuccessful.

The athletes are calling on Governor Yusuf to take immediate action, warning that Kano State’s performance in sports could suffer if the issue is not addressed.
