FG to Empower Local Manufacturers to Produce Malaria Drugs

The Coordinator, National Malaria Elimination Programme, Dr. Audu Mohammed, said Federal Government would empower local manufacturers to produce malaria drugs locally.

He told newsmen in Abuja that the government would be doing this through the World Health Organisation (WHO) prequalification program.

He said the prequalification Programme, set up in 2001, was a service provided by WHO to facilitate access to medicines that met unified standards of quality, safety, and efficacy for HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

The coordinator added that the Program had applied for a fund from three donors, World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and Africa Development Bank to support manufacturers and buy malaria live-saving commodities.

Mohammed, however, called on corporate bodies to support the effort of the government to eliminate malaria.
