EWEI Implements ‘We for Them’ Project in Kaduna, Receives AWDF Support

Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has unveiled new partnership with African Women Development Fund (AWDF) to fight Sexual and Gender-based Violence in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

The project ‘We for Them’ seek to reduce rates of sexual and gender-based violence and provide support systems for the victims in the state.

The developmet was conveyed in a Press Statement issued by Salome Patience Yakubu, the Project Lead at EWEI.

Yakubu disclosed “From April 2022 to March 2024, Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI), with support from the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), will be implementing the ‘We For The’ (WFT) Project,”

Adding that, “the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a grant-making foundation that supports local, national, and regional women’s organisations working towards empowering African women, promoting and realising their rights,”

Explaining ‘We for Them’ ( WFT), the Statement posited that it aim at raising out 4,500 beneficiaries partnering Staff of Polytechnic and Road workers.

“WFT Project aims to reduce sexual and gender-based violence rates, focusing on sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces. The Project will also raise awareness about EWEI’s Gender-based Violence toll-free helpline and support systems for survivors. For the WFT Project, EWEI will be working with the Kaduna State branch of 2 unions: The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Kaduna Polytechnic Branch. This collaboration aims to benefit over 4,500 beneficiaries across Kaduna state,”

The WFT Project Lead, Salome Patience Yakubu expressed EWEI’s delight to engage in this partnership with the AWDF: “we are happy because this Project will provide women and girls an additional platform to report any form of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), especially sexual harassment and abuses. This project takes a unique approach by engaging men and boys as allies in addressing issues of GBV and sexual harassment.”

The NGO, Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI), was founded in April 2008 and officially registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria on 6 June 2008. It is also registered with, and partners with a variety of state and non-state actors in Kaduna State Government, nationally and internationally.

The mission of the organization is to provide multi-sectoral interventions towards the empowerment of girls and wome, and vision, is to achieve empowerment through enlightenment. EWEI achieve these through Capacity Building, Information Dissemination, Advocacy and Cross-Cutting Community Service.
