The Kabilun Africa Think Tank (KATT), hosted by Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI), Monday, announced the establishment of Women in International Security (WIIS) in Nigeria, an international affiliate of WIIS Global.

This milestone marks a significant step towards promoting women’s leadership in peace and security sectors.

According to Safiya Ibn Garba DTRF, KATT Convener and Lead WIIS Nigeria, “We are very pleased to have established this international affiliate of WIIS. KATT foresees rich collaboration on initiatives of global significance.”

This partnership is expected to bring about impactful work on gender, peace, and security, supporting progressive policies on the continent and beyond.

WIIS Nigeria aims to promote women’s participation in peace and security decision-making, support research and policy engagement initiatives, and foster a community of women leaders in the sector. As WIIS Global notes, “We are delighted to officially welcome WIIS Nigeria to our global network. We are eager to amplify and learn from the new perspectives, energy, and insight that WIIS Nigeria members bring to the table.”

With WIIS Global’s extensive network of over 15,000 members across nearly 50 countries, WIIS Nigeria is poised to contribute to global discussions on women, peace, and security.

Safiyya is also the Founder and Programmes Director of EWEI, established in 2008, has a mission is to provide multi-sectoral interventions towards the empowerment of girls and women, and its vision is to achieve empowerment through enlightenment.

In a statement issued by Uche Brown Egbe, the Communications Manager of the organisation, he added that EWEI “work towards empowering women through
Capacity Building, Information Dissemination, Advocacy and Cross-Cutting Community Service Projects,” which has reach at the end of 2023 over 4.5 million girls, women, and community members through onsite and online activities.

KATT, established in 2022, aims to address leadership inefficiencies and over-dependence on external resources, supporting the development of purposeful leadership for sustainable development. KATT works to harness the intellectual capital of Africans and those of African descent of all ages, locally and in the diaspora, to propose innovative solutions to influence policy and governance.

KATT and EWEI will work together to implement activities through WIIS Nigeria, leveraging their expertise and network to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This development is a significant step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 and African Union Agenda 2063 frameworks, which aim to promote peace, security, and gender equality. As KATT works to harness the intellectual capital of Africans and those of African descent, WIIS Nigeria is expected to play a crucial role in shaping policy and governance in the region.
