The Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has canceled plans to hold a parallel Sallah durbar procession in Kano, citing the need to maintain peace and stability. This decision comes amid rising tension in the state, as both Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Emir Aminu Bayero had initially planned separate traditional Sallah durbar celebrations.

The situation had sparked concerns over potential unrest, prompting Emir Bayero to consult with religious leaders, elders, and his council members before making the decision to withdraw from the procession. He hopes that canceling the event will foster peace in the state, saying “We pray that this withdrawal will bring lasting peace to our dear state”.

Emir Bayero emphasized that the Sallah durbar should not be prioritized if it risks escalating tensions. Instead, he urged residents to focus on family and community ties during the festive period, saying “We call on the people to use the festive period for visitation to strengthen the bond of kinship” .

This cancellation is seen as a move to maintain peace and stability in the state, following concerns over potential unrest. Emir Bayero had initially informed the police of his intention to hold the durbar but later decided to cancel the event.

The conflict between Emir Bayero and Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II stems from a 2020 dispute, where Sanusi was removed as the 14th Emir of Kano, and Bayero was appointed in his place. Although the law was changed in 2024, reinstating Sanusi, Bayero has refused to accept his removal.

In a broadcast, Emir Bayero explained that his decision to cancel the Sallah durbar was influenced by consultations with respected religious leaders and other concerned stakeholders. He apologized to the people of Kano, urging them to embrace the move in the interest of the state’s well-being.
