The State Working Committee (SWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state has suspended Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the Chairman of the party.

The embattled chairman was suspended during a meeting held at the state party secretariat Tuesday, 1 June 2021, by  two third majority of members.

Spokesman of the party, Mr Chris Nehikhare, in a statement, said the chairman was accused of “gross misconduct of brewing unnecessary tension and disunity among party members in a manner akin to bringing the party into disrepute”.

Nehikhare stated that the SWC resolved in a motion that Tony Aziegbemi should step aside and therefore asked  Hon. Harrison Omagbon, the state deputy chairman to act in his place until the determination of the allegations levelled against him.

He added that an Investigative committee headed by the State Legal Adviser Barr. Arthur Esene has been set up, and is mandated to report back to the SWC.

The statement read in parts:  “this decision hard as it is, is designed to bring sanity back to our party.

“It would be like ignoring the elephant in the room if we ignore this macabre dance as Edo people have watched in utter amazement and disappointment how Dr Tony Aziegbemi has been roped and entangled by his actions.

“We are a very disciplined party and pride ourselves as organised and focused on service delivery to our teeming supporters and of course Edo people”.
