Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will deploy troops to Guinea-Bissau to help stabilize the country after this week’s attempted coup.
ECOWAS made the announcement after a summit held in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
ECOWAS said the force will help prevent any attempted coups in future.
ECOWAS deployed troops to Guinea-Bissau from 2012 to 2020 after a coup.
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has said that stability has been restored in the country after the failed coup.
Meanwhile, Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo has said ECOWAS Heads of State has reiterated the firm position that there is absolutely no excuse for a change of government by coup d’état.
He said this yesterday after attending the ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit that held in Accra, capital of Ghana, and the topic of discussion bordered on the political situations in Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea.
The vice president said as far as ECOWAS is concerned, the one way of changing government in the region, acceptable to all of the protocols and the political rights of the people is by a democratically elected government.
Professor Osinbajo who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the summit, fielded questions from reporters on the outcome of the summit.
His spokesman Laolu Akande in a statement said the vice president returned to Abuja yesterday evening from Accra.
