The Dangote refinery has begun the initial operations of its polypropylene plant in Lagos.

S&P Global reports that the initiation of Dangote’s polypropylene facility, which has a capacity of 830,000 metric tonnes annually, marked one of the final key steps in the commissioning process of the oil refining and petrochemical complex. This process has been ongoing since January 2024.

Polypropylene manufacturing has commenced, with the product being delivered in 25kg bags. This development has the potential to disrupt the local market, according to information provided by two market sources to Platts, a division of S&P Global Commodity Insights.

Aliko Dangote, the President of the Dangote Group, has expressed his expectations that the complex will be able to meet the entire domestic demand of around 250,000 metric tonnes annually for polypropylene, a material widely used in plastic packaging and textiles.

Once the Dangote facility reaches full operational capacity, it is poised to become the largest polypropylene production site in Africa. The facility will consist of two polypropylene units with production capacities of 500,000 metric tons per year and 330,000 metric tons per year, respectively.
