Comptroller Oramalugo Visits Olubadan of Ibadan, Seeks Collaboration to Suppress Smuggling

Comptroller Ben Oramalugo, in charge of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Oyo/Osun Area Command, on Wednesday, 5 September 2024, paid a courtesy visit to the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty (HIM) Oba Owolabi Olakuleyin, Ige Olakuleyin I, at the Olubadan’s palace at Oke-Aremo, Ibadan to seek his support in the fight against smuggling. The visit was also in recognition of the traditional institution’s crucial role in fostering peace and security in the region.

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Customs Kayode Wey, the visit aimed to strengthen the existing relationship between the Oyo/Osun Area Command and the traditional leadership of Ibadan, as both entities work together to promote economic growth, secure borders, and enhance community engagement.

In his address, Comptroller Oramalugo expressed that it was an honour and privilege to visit His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, “whose leadership and wisdom have greatly contributed to the peace and development of this ancient city.”

He added, “The Customs Service values the support and cooperation of traditional rulers to ensure that smuggling activities are curbed and legitimate trade is promoted within Oyo and Osun states.”

The Customs Area Controller also briefed the Olubadan on the Command’s activities, highlighting its achievements in revenue generation, the suppression of smuggling, and trade facilitation. He expressed appreciation for the peaceful environment Ibadan provides, which allows the Customs Service to effectively discharge its duties. Comptroller Oramalugo also sought greater collaboration with the traditional institution to enable the Command to achieve its core mandate and improve service delivery.

In response, the Olubadan of Ibadan, represented by Oba Hamidu Ajibade Salaudeen (the Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland), applauded the CAC’s initiative, noting that the visit displayed a high level of respect for tradition. He also commended the Nigeria Customs Service’s efforts in safeguarding the nation’s economic interests and protecting local industries from the adverse effects of smuggling.

The Olubadan assured the Comptroller and his team of the traditional institution’s continued support in combating illegal trade and ensuring the security of the region.
