President Muhammadu Buhari, whose government has been accused of clamping down on free speech, has accused the Nigerian media of reporting irresponsible remarks.

The President said this today during his televised broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary.

President Buhari’s attack on the media as a collective was part of his comment on how some of the violence being perpetrated across Nigeria are caused by remarks people make.

While President Buhari reserved his attack for the media, he appreciated the large number of Traditional, Religious and Community leaders as well as other well-meaning Nigerians who, in their various fora are openly spreading the message of peaceful co-existence.

Meanwhile, president Buhari has stated that the significant spike in the prices of food in the country is caused by middlemen who have been buying and holding essential commodities.

The president’s comments come as prices of major staple foods in Nigeria have risen at an average of about 98.85 and 99.9 per cents respectively, in the last year.
