President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his election as Chairperson of the Council of the World Customs Organisation (WCO).

Adeniyi was unanimously elected on Saturday in Brussels, making him the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old global body, which has 186 member countries.

President Tinubu described the achievement as a proud moment for Nigeria, saying:
“This event shows the strong leadership of Adeniyi. I congratulate him for bringing pride to our country and supporting our economic reforms.”

The President also noted that under Adeniyi’s leadership in the past two years, the NCS has improved revenue collection, built stronger partnerships, and modernised its operations.

He thanked the WCO for trusting Nigeria and assured them that the country would fully support Adeniyi’s leadership.

Adeniyi will take over from Edward Kieswetter of South Africa and begin his new role on July 1, 2025.
