Gunmen stormed a mosque in Bushe town, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, during early morning prayers on Thursday, abducting at least 10 worshippers, including the Imam.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson DSP Ahmed Rufai assuring that the police, in conjunction with other security agencies, are working to ensure the immediate release of the abductees.
A local source revealed that the attack occurred while worshippers were performing their Subhi prayer. Despite the presence of security forces, including troops of Operation Fasan Yamma from the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division headquarters, the community has suffered repeated attacks.
Sa’idu Ibrahim, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing the area, confirmed the incident, stating that at least 10 people were kidnapped. He commended the troops for preventing further abductions.
“I was informed that the attackers invaded the mosque during the Subhi prayer and took away many worshippers. The troops stationed in the area responded quickly and chased the attackers, preventing them from taking more people,” he said.
The lawmaker, who described the incident as unfortunate, appealed to the government to intensify efforts to address the security challenges facing the state.
The attack on the mosque is the latest in a series of kidnappings and banditry attacks in Sokoto State. Just last week, bandits abducted the district head of the area, Alhaji Zubairu Galadima.
The state government has been working to address the security challenges, but the attacks have continued.
The police command, in a statement, assured that the security agencies are working to rescue the abducted worshippers.
“The command is working tirelessly in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the safe release of the abducted worshippers,” the statement said.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of worshippers in mosques and the need for increased security measures to prevent such attacks.
Daily Trust reports that the attack on the mosque has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for increased security measures to protect worshippers.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has condemned the attack, describing it as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”
The Sultan, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), called on the government to take immediate action to rescue the abducted worshippers and prevent future attacks.
“We condemn this attack in the strongest terms and call on the government to take immediate action to rescue the abducted worshippers and prevent future attacks,” the Sultan said.
The incident has also sparked concerns about the impact of the attack on the community and the need for increased support for the victims and their families.
