A Federal High Court in Kano State has sentenced Musbahu Muhamud, a 40-year-old fisherman, to seven years in prison for sexually exploiting a 10-year-old girl.
Presiding Judge Justice S. M. Shu’aibu convicted Muhamud, a resident of Layin Gidan Sarki Zango, Galinje in Ajingi Local Government Area, Kano, on charges of sexual exploitation.
Shu’aibu ruled that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to the defendant’s sentencing without an option for a fine.
The Prosecutor, Kano State Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mr. Abdullahi Babale, informed the court that Muhamud committed the offense on October 6.
To support the case, the prosecution presented four exhibits, including the convict’s confessional statement and the victim’s testimony.
According to Babale, Muhamud’s actions violated Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, and are punishable under Section 26(1) of the same Act.
The defense counsel, Mr. I. I. Ibrahim, appealed for leniency on behalf of his client.
