A women’s right organization Empowering Women for Excellence Initiatives (EWEI), has condemn what it described as “incessant acts of violence against women and girls in Nigeria and globally,”
EWEI noted that “every human being on planet earth is entitled to human rights,”
This is contained in a press statement issued by EWEI on Thurday obtained by this paper. The statement signed by Uche Brown Egbei, the Senior Program Officer – Communications of the organization added that “Dialogue and letting the law take its rightful course are vital to addressing any issue of conflict and violence,”
The full statement reads, “Every human being on planet earth is entitled to human rights. These include the right to live free from violence and discrimination, enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, be educated, own property, vote, and the right to work and earn an equal wage.
“But across the globe, many women and girls still face discrimination based on race, religion, ethnicity, sex and gender. Gender inequality underpins many problems which disproportionately affect women and girls, such as domestic and sexual violence, lower pay, gruesome attacks, lack of access to education, and inadequate healthcare.
“For many years Women’s Rights movements like EWEI have fought hard to address this inequality, campaigning to change laws or taking to the streets to demand that the rights of Women and Girls are respected. And new activities have flourished in the digital age, such as the #MeToo campaign, which highlighted the prevalence of gender-based violence and sexual harassment and many more trending hashtags calling for justice for survivors and victims for example #JusticeForJennifer, #JusticeForShireen, #JusticeForDeborah etc.
“For over two decades, journalist Shireen Abu Akleh covered human rights abuses in the occupied Palestinian territory. As a result, a generation grew up watching the Al Jazeera broadcaster break down some of the most challenging pieces of news to cover.
“On May 11 2022, Wednesday morning local time, she was shot and killed while doing the same, reporting on a raid of the West Bank city of Jenin by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
“On May 12 2022, Thursday afternoon, Deborah Samuel, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was killed, her remains burnt by some Muslim students of the school for alleged blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad.
In our world today, each passing day, women and girls are always caught up in violent extremist attacks and different forms of
gender-based violence, which is outrightly a violation of their human rights.
“Dialogue and letting the law take its rightful course are vital to addressing any issues of conflict and violence thereby ensuring women’s rights are upheld in the face of any allegations.
Empowering Women for Excellence Initiative (EWEI) strongly condemns the incessant acts of violence against women and girls in Nigeria and globally; and believes that unless the police and relevant authorities ensure the perpetrators of these horrific acts are
made to face justice in line with the law then an escalating global humanitarian risk of women human rights violations is inevitable.
