At least 25 people were killed on Monday when gunmen stormed Kabul University in Afghanistan, firing shots and sending students fleeing.

The Taliban said they were not involved, but several education centres have been attacked over the years by extremist groups such as Islamic State.

A spokesman for the ministry of higher education, Hamid Obaidi, told newsmen that gunfire erupted when government officials were expected to arrive for the opening of an event in the university.

It was reported that several people had been rescued from the university campus.
