A dispute over a water pond in an Abuja community turned deadly, resulting in the death of one person, John Moses Gwatana.
The violence erupted on Sunday around 11:23 a.m. when herders led their cattle to the pond, sparking a confrontation with villagers.
The FCT police command confirmed the incident, saying one person was killed while several others were injured.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Josephine Adeh, said, “At about 1123hrs, a distress call was received from the DPO, Bwari divisional headquarters, that there was a clash between some herders and villagers at Kwali village, off Bwari-Kubwa expressway.”
She said the clash arose from a dispute over a water pond in the area.
Adeh said, “Unfortunately, one John Moses Gwatana was killed during the clash, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.”
She said the area has been cordoned off by the police, and normalcy has been restored.
The incident is the latest in a series of clashes between herders and villagers in Nigeria, often sparked by competition for resources such as land and water.
